INTRODUCTORY INTENSIVE

In this interactive, intensive course, Jerry covers all the techniques he teaches in one of his in-person, introductory workshops. Participants explore the basic materials, tools, surfaces, and techniques he and Rebecca Crowell employ in their own work. Students work with cold wax, oils, pigment sticks, and powdered pigments, and experience the expressive potential of layering, texture, and mark-making. In addition, Jerry addresses barriers to creativity, letting go, and working more freely.

Jerry demonstrates the techniques over 3 consecutive days, and then the class meets again weekly for 2 follow-up classes. Students have ‘homework’ assignments to help guide their learning. In addition, Jerry hosts live office hours weekly between classes – students can drop in during those hours and ask any questions they might have. This structure gives participants plenty of time to practice the techniques, ask follow-up questions, and develop work between sessions.

All live sessions are recorded, and students can re-watch for up to 30 days.

INTRODUCTORY INTENSIVE WORKSHOPS

Based on his groundbreaking book with Rebecca Crowell, Cold Wax Medium: Techniques, Concepts & Conversations, Jerry’s introductory intensive workshops offer much more than other workshops, beyond just demos and hands-on experience with cold wax medium. Participants explore the materials, tools, surfaces, and techniques he and Rebecca employ in their own work. Participants paint with cold wax, oils, pigment sticks, and powdered pigments, and experience the expressive potential of layering, texture, and mark-making. In addition, Jerry helps artists address barriers to creativity, letting go, and working more freely. Some of Jerry’s students have taken this workshop three times! These introductory workshops are for artists with prior experience painting but new to cold wax medium or those with some cold wax experience who are looking to broaden or reinforce their skills.

Workshop topics include:

  • Basic tools, materials, surfaces, and safety

  • Understanding and mastering stages of dryness

  • Working wet-in-wet

  • Foundational layers and texture

  • Brayer techniques and veil of color

  • Mark-making for structure and expression

  • Stencils, masking, creating shape, and dividing space

  • Pigments, powders, and particulates

  • Mechanical and solvent reductions

  • Techniques for a dry surface

  • And MORE!

ADVANCED and SPECIALTY WORKSHOPS

Are you ready to move beyond an introductory intensive course? Is there a specific focus that interests you? Jerry offers a variety of advanced and specialty courses - some he teaches alone and some jointly with another instructor. All offer demos and hands-on experience with cold wax medium. Participants go beyond basic materials, tools, and techniques.**

Workshops Offered:

  • Cold Wax - The Next Level, an advanced level workshop

  • Cold Wax - Moving Toward Mastery, an advanced level workshop

  • Spontaneity & Control - taught with Michela Sorrentino

  • The Figure and Cold Wax Medium - taught with Melinda Cootsona

  • The Power of Contrast - taught with Rebecca Crowell

**These workshops are for artists with prior experience using cold wax medium who want to take their work to a deeper level. Because these are advanced and specialty classes not focused on basic techniques, to assure that the workshop is a good fit, participants must have previously taken a workshop with Jerry or Rebecca or must submit 6-8 cold wax works for review prior to registering for the workshop or being placed on the waitlist.**

THE POWER OF CONTRAST

An advanced workshop with Jerry McLaughlin and Rebecca Crowell

Future dates TBA

Artists often only think of ‘value’ when they think of contrast in their paintings. While value contrast is indeed important, bringing contrast to other aspects of your painting (color, shape, scale, line, texture, etc) will take your work to a new level. Contrast can also be explored within the ideas in a painting.

In this workshop participants will focus both on technical mastery and on the importance of contrast in abstract painting. In addition to reviewing traditional and advanced cold wax techniques, to help participants think more deeply about their work, Jerry and Rebecca will offer special presentations and focused one-on-one consultations. During this workshop artists will be challenged to push deeper into their work, both technically and conceptually.
